The 20th Battle of the Chefs runs 21 to 24 October 2026 at Setia SPICE Arena in Bayan Lepas. myPenang, Worldchefs, and the Penang Chefs Association all list those four days. It is a Worldchefs-endorsed continental culinary competition, not a hawker fair, and it sits under the same roof as the Malaysia Culinary Summit and Expo 2026.
What 20 editions actually means
Battle of the Chefs started in Penang in 1988 as a local contest run by the Penang Chefs Association. Worldchefs now lists it as a continental event. The official Worldchefs page puts competition hours at 9.00am to 6.00pm. The 2024 edition at SPICE drew more than 1,100 participants and 1,300 entries, judged by 84 Worldchefs-certified international judges. Organisers are pitching 2026 as the largest yet.
At an August press conference, organising chairman chef Audee Cheah, who also presidents the Penang Chefs Association, told The Star that more than 500 competitors from 10 countries had already registered, with a target of more than 2,000 chefs and culinary professionals on site. More than 90 competition classes sit under Young Chefs and Master Chefs tracks. More than 100 Worldchefs-certified judges from more than 20 countries are booked. Prize money, medals, and trophies total more than RM100,000.
Competitor registration closed on 20 September 2026. Early bird ended 15 August. If you cook for a living and missed those dates, you are watching, not plating. The public side is the expo floor, live kitchens, and the Asia Food Festival, not a walk-up cook-off.
Three events, one arena
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai told Buletin Mutiara on 11 August that the Malaysia Culinary Summit and Expo 2026 stacks three programmes together: Battle of the Chefs, the International Gourmet Expo, and the Asia Food Festival. He called the package one of the country's larger hospitality gatherings. Organisers project more than 30,000 trade visitors and consumers over four days.
The International Gourmet Expo, organised by Lord of Gourmet and the Malaysia Food and Restaurants Association, is scheduled with eight industry forums and B2B matching, tied to the Jom Makan Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign. That track is for buyers, hoteliers, and suppliers. The Asia Food Festival is the one built for a general ticket: Malaysian and regional dishes, artisan products, live cooking, and street-food style stalls inside the arena, according to the same state briefing.
Presenting partners named by Buletin Mutiara are Chefonic, Merrychef, and Convotherm. A new award this year is the Chef Otto Weibel Trophy, named after the late culinary educator and international judge. Finalists for that trophy cook in a purpose-built kitchen sponsored by Endura and powered by Get Rental. Worldchefs hosts the rulebook download on its event page. Competitor classes and remaining trade details sit on asiaculinarychallenge.com and battleofthechefs.com.my.
Should a George Town eater bother with SPICE?
If you want char kway teow, stay in town. Battle of the Chefs is industry theatre: timed platings, ice carvings, pastry showpieces, Nyonya and plant-forward classes, and judges with clipboards. The 2024 rule set already included Plant-Forward Cuisine, Asian Heritage Dish Revival, and Modern Street Food Innovations. Those classes are the closest the competition gets to the food Penang is famous for, but they are still hotel-kitchen versions of street dishes, scored to Worldchefs sheets.
Go if you work in F&B, study culinary arts, or want to watch a live hot kitchen under competition lights. Wong told The Star that Penang is "the food capital of Asia" and that internationally established chefs are expected. That is the state line. The useful fact underneath it is simpler: four days of open kitchens at SPICE, in the same week many island stalls are still on Nine Emperor Gods vegetarian menus. You can do both. Eat zhai in George Town through 18 October, then take a bus south on the 21st.
Setia SPICE Arena sits at Relau, Bayan Lepas, next to the convention centre and the aquatic complex. Rapid Penang routes serving the airport corridor stop at SPICE. From George Town, budget 45 to 70 minutes by bus depending on traffic, less by Grab. Parking fills on event mornings. Worldchefs lists the venue as Georgetown in its calendar, which is the state, not the UNESCO core. The arena is on the island's southeast, near the airport, not on Lebuh Pantai.
How this sits on Penang's October food calendar
myPenang's October list also carries the Nine Emperor Gods Festival from 10 to 18 October, the Penang International Travel Exchange at PWCC from 27 to 29 October, and smaller mall activations that have already closed. Battle of the Chefs is the only dated, official culinary competition of this scale in the state this month. It is not a replacement for the Penang International Food Festival, which Visit Penang still files under July programming.
Cheah told The Star that over 38 years the contest has shaped culinary careers in the north. That claim is organiser language. What visitors can verify on the floor is more concrete: medal tables, live judging, trade booths, and an Asia Food Festival that is supposed to sell actual food rather than only trophies. Confirm public ticket prices on the organiser sites before you go. Neither myPenang nor Worldchefs published a consumer walk-in fee in the pages fetched for this piece. Trade registration and competitor fees are separate, and competitor entry is already closed.
