Mid-Autumn 2026 in George Town: Clan Jetties on 29 September, Mooncakes, and a Sunday Carnival

Mid-Autumn in George Town is 29 September 2026, the 15th night of the eighth lunar month. The useful walk is not a mall atrium. It is Weld Quay, the Clan Jetties, then the bakeries on and around Penang Road for mooncakes. Cheah Kongsi on Armenian Street is the other evening stop if you want a courtyard instead of a jetty plank.

Clan Jetties after dark, without treating it like a theme park

There are seven clan jetties. Chew Jetty takes most of the tourists and has asked visitors to come between 9am and 9pm. Tan Jetty is quieter and still photogenic. Entry is free. Donations at the gate are the polite move. These are houses on stilts, not a night market. Keep voices down after dinner. Do not block kitchen doors for a lantern selfie.

On Mid-Autumn night the jetties usually pick up extra lanterns, family tables, and a thicker crowd from the ferry terminal side. If 29 September is packed, walk it the night before or after. The full moon is the festival date. The streets still look lit for a few evenings either side. Grab to Pengkalan Weld and walk. Rapid Penang buses also drop at the jetty terminal.

Mooncakes, and the Marriott box that is actually about Penang

Penang Road still does the traditional bakery run. Him Heang is the name people repeat for biscuits, not always mooncakes, but the Campbell Street and Penang Road stretch fills with seasonal boxes through late September. The Star's 25 August metro piece flagged Penang Marriott Hotel's "Moonlit Heritage, Timeless Connections" gift box, which uses state architecture on the packaging rather than a generic lotus stamp. Hotel boxes cost hotel money. Buy one if you need a gift. Buy the bakery version if you just want to eat.

From 1 September 2026 Penang enforces a full ban on single-use plastic bags. St. Nicholas' Home already put that in the notes for its 12 September charity food carnival. Bring a bag to the jetties and the bakeries. The carnival itself is a separate Sunday: 8.30am to 2pm at the home's field off Persiaran Midlands, RM50 coupon booklets, a RM150,000 target for the home's 100th year. If you want a food-for-a-cause morning before the lantern week, that is the one.

What else sits in the same month

Malaysia Day on 16 September is a public holiday. Padang Kota Lama usually gets the official programme. Navaratri runs about 22 September to 1 October at Waterfall Road's Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple and Sri Maha Mariamman on Chulia Street. That is a different religion and a different night walk. Do not mash it into the lantern plan. Eat vegetarian at the Hindu temples if you go; eat mooncake at the jetties if you don't.

Hawker centres stay the real dinner. Clan Jetty cafes are fine for a drink. For char kway teow and assam laksa, walk back into the heritage grid. The jetty is the setting. The food that made Penang's name is still a few streets inland.
